Model Types and Layouts

Selecting a Model Type

When creating a model, you will need to determine if the model should be a planning or analytic model. These are the two model types that the application has to offer. The two have essential differences to remember when choosing a model type.

Analytic Planning
Purpose
Analyze data and gain insights.
Create budgets or forecasts.
Data
Primarily contain historical data.
Typically have historical as well as future projections.
Input
Does not allow data input.
Does allow data input.
Data Source
Can be created from a live data source.
Can not be created based on a live data source*

Live models created based on a live connection to SAP BPC embedded configuration support planning functionalities.

Selecting a Model Layout

SAP Analytics Cloud offers two layouts by which you can structure your measure data in a model. These options are Measure Layout (also called “New Model Type”) and Account Layout (also called “Classic Account Model”).

The layout option chosen determines how the model values must be structured in your data.

Measure Layout

The measure layout offers the most flexibility. It allows for multiple measures to be created as individual entities. This layout does not require an account dimension, but one can still be utilized if needed.

Account Layout

In the account layout, there is only one measure in which all model values are stored. An account dimension must be utilized to define different values.
