Introduction

In SAP Analytics Cloud, you can sort measures and dimensions in charts, or you can use Break Grouping to change how measures and dimensions are sorted in a chart with multiple dimensions on the category axis.

You can specify the sort order for data in your chart for measures and dimensions:

  • Alphabetical ascending
  • Alphabetical descending
  • Custom order

Note

  • You can sort data on multiple dimensions, you can’t sort on dimensions and measures together, you can only sort on one measure at a time.

Procedure:

1

Select a chart and on the top right corner click on the ellipses (3 dots).

2

Select the measure or dimension you want to sort and then choose between Ascending, Descending, Custom Order. The default is Default Order.

Procedure:

When neither ascending or descending sort will give the results that you want, you can create a custom sort order.

1

Select a chart and on the top right corner click on the ellipses (3 dots).

2

Select the dimension that you want to sort, and then select Add Custom Order.

3

In the Edit Member Order dialog box, provide a name for the custom sort.

4

Drag the members to rearrange them.

5

(Optional) Select Preview to see how the members would be rearranged.

6

When you are finished, select OK.

You can use some of the available functions in the Edit Member Order panel to use in the custom sort.

  1. Search member: The member name will be highlighted in the list. For a flat presentation, the search will scroll to that member and then highlight it.
  2. All: Shows all the data in the chart for the dimension.
  3. Visible: Shows what is currently visible in the chart for the dimension.

If a member is empty/null, it will not show up in the Visible member list. You will need to select All and then rearrange the member order. If you have drilled down in a hierarchy, you can only rearrange the members in the visible drill level.

Managing Custom Sort Orders:

• You can create multiple custom sort orders for each dimension, however, you can apply only one custom order per dimension.

• To switch between custom orders, select the ellipses (3 dots) -> Sort, then select the dimension which has the custom order and choose the custom order you want.

• To modify a custom order, select the ellipses (3 dots) -> Sort, click on the pencil icon beside the custom order to edit. Once changes have been made, click on Ok.

Advanced Sorting:

Advanced sorting is used when you want to sort a measure that is not included in the chart.

1

To do this, select the chart and click on the ellipses (3 dots) -> Sort -> Advanced Sorting.

2

Select an option for each field, and then click on OK.

Break Grouping in a Chart:

When there are multiple dimensions on the category axis, you can use the Break Grouping option to ignore the grouping order and change how the dimensions and measures are sorted. The Break Grouping option is available to use on a chart with multiple dimensions. To enable or disable Break Grouping, select the ellipses (3 dots) -> Sort -> Break Grouping.

The result of selecting this option is shown below.
