When launching Data Analyzer in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), the first required step is selecting a data source. This determines what data you can explore and what features will be available in your analysis session.
What is a Data Source?
In Data Analyzer, a data source is typically one of the following:
- SAP BW Query (via live connection)
- SAP HANA View (live calculation view)
- SAP Analytics Cloud Model (acquired or live)
- SAP Datasphere Model (via live connection)
Once a source is selected, its structure—dimensions, measures, variables—is loaded into the Builder Panel for analysis.
Steps to Connect to a Data Source
Launch the Data Analyzer
1
From the Home screen, select Data Analyzer from the menu.
Select a Data Source
2
The “Select Data Source” dialog appears.
3
Use the search bar or scroll to locate the desired model or query.
4
Supported formats will include SAC models, BW queries, HANA views, and Datasphere datasets.
Respond to Variable Prompts (If Applicable)
5
If the data source includes mandatory variables or prompts, a dialog will appear.
6
You must enter valid values before proceeding.
7
These prompts can include filters like fiscal period, region, or version.
Begin Analyzing
8
Once the data source is loaded, its structure becomes available in the Builder Panel.
9
From here, you can begin selecting dimensions, measures, and applying filters.
Best Practices
- Choose the Right Model Type: For financial data or snapshot-based analysis, acquired SAC models may be preferable. For real-time data, live queries from BW, HANA, or Datasphere provide up-to-date results.
- Understand the Prompts: Data sources with variable prompts may return no data if not filled correctly. Always review which prompts are required before launching.
Limitations
Single Source Only: Data Analyzer only supports one data source per insight. Multi-source blending is not available.
Model Changes: If a model is modified after you’ve created your insight (e.g., deleted fields), the insight may no longer work as expected.
Access Control: You will only see data sources you have permission to access.
