Data Analyzer supports the following data sources:

1. SAP BW Live Connections

  • Supports BEx Queries.
  • Variable prompts and hierarchies are fully supported.
  • Enables zero suppression and compact display.
  • Allows for real-time access to backend data without data replication.

2. SAP HANA Live Views

  • Supports calculation views via live connections.
  • Allows users to filter, sort, and drill into data in real-time.
  • Hierarchies and prompts may vary depending on the model setup.

3. SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) Models

  • Both acquired and live models are supported.
  • Works with account or measure-based models.
  • Users can apply filters, prompts, and formatting as needed.
  • All changes made in the Data Analyzer are non-destructive—no impact on the original model.

4. SAP Datasphere Models

  • Available via live connection to SAP Datasphere (formerly Data Warehouse Cloud).
  • Supports consumption of analytic datasets and graphical views.
  • Enables seamless data exploration on federated sources with real-time access.
  • Works well for use cases involving composable data products or business semantic layers.

Key Considerations

  • Single Data Source Only: Data Analyzer works with only one model or query at a time. Combining data from multiple sources is not supported.
  • Prompts: If the underlying model has input prompts (variables), these will appear when the data source is loaded. Users must enter required values before proceeding with the analysis.
  • Model Restrictions: Certain model features (like custom calculations or data actions) are not editable within Data Analyzer but will still render if already defined.
  • Performance: Live connections (e.g., BW, HANA, Datasphere) reflect real-time data and system performance depends on backend response times. Acquired SAC models may offer quicker interaction but rely on snapshot data.

Required Permissions

To access a data source in Data Analyzer:

  • The user must have permission to access the model or query.
  • Most standard roles (e.g., BI Content Viewer, Modeler) include the necessary permissions.
  • For Datasphere models, access must be granted within the Datasphere workspace and exposed to SAC.

Where to Select a Data Source

When you launch Data Analyzer:

  • You’ll be prompted to select a data source.
  • You can choose a live BW/HANA model, a SAC model, or a Datasphere view available in your tenant.
  • Once selected, the structure (dimensions, measures, variables) becomes available in the Builder Panel for analysis.

Switching Data Sources

You can change the data source within an insight, but all previous configurations (filters, layouts) will be cleared.

  • It’s recommended to finalize the source early to avoid losing table setup.
